Description and Ecology of the Tiger
This iconic creature, the tiger (panthera tigris) is the largest cat of the cat species. They have red/orange fur with a lighter underside and distinct, dark, vertical stripes. These cats are territorial and generally solitary, yet social animals. These are also apex predators. They require large continuous areas of habitat that support their living requirements as well as their prey requirements. They are indigenous to some of the most densely populated areas on Earth. They range across eastern Eurasia. Tigers are important to cultures in Asia and around the world.

Geographic and Population Changes



Over the past 100 years there has been a 93% loss of the tigers historic range. This is in eastern Eurasia. They live in tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps,evergreen forests, temperate forests, grasslands and savannas. This includes, but isn't limited to Africa, India, Thailand and Cambodia. There used to be 100,000 tigers at the start of the 20th century, now there are only around 3,200-3,500 living. The remaining population live in
small pockets isolated from each other. Much of the habitat has been destroyed due to clearing forests and grasslands for agriculture, commercial logging and recently, the rapid infrastructure development.


Listing Date and Type   
The tiger was listed as “endangered” by the international Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2010. The St. Petersburg declaration on Tiger Conservation declared
a plan on November 23, 2010.



Cause of Listing and Main Threats  


The major cause of their listing and their main threats are due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal wildlife trade and human-tiger conflict. Habitat degradation and fragmentation is largely driven by clearing forests and grasslands for agriculture, commercial logging, and recently the rapid infrastructure development. This is leaving tigers no place to live and it's making it very hard for them to find food. Poaching, the illegal wildlife trade, and trafficking for their parts are all driven by consumer demand is a primary and immediate threat to their survival as well. Tigers have been extirpated due to poaching in areas where they had excellent habitat. The majority of countries and states have legislation in place to help protect tigers from poachers, due to the lack of resources the enforcement of these laws is not very effective. They have inadequate patrolling and are unable to make an impact on the poachers. Their prey on which they depend on has also been reduced throughout much of their range.  



Recovery Plan
The goals of the Recovery plan are to reverse the rapid decline of wild tigers and aim to double the number of wild tigers by 2022. This would mean going from the current number of tigers, 3,200 to ideally around 6,800. In order for this to happen certain new policies have to be implemented. These are to improve legal protection of critical tiger habitats and increase penalties to anyone who commits wildlife crime. Implement a stronger legal basis for making critical tiger habitats more protected. These countries need to establish the best management practices for infrastructure and industry development in buffer zones. They also need to increase sharing benefits from any conservation efforts in these buffer zones. These countries must develop policies for a captive tiger monitoring and registration system and breeding management plans. They must strengthen policy for transboundary management of shared landscape and collaboration in law enforcement. And finally these countries must establish new policies for financing to ensure adequate transfers for ecosystem services for tiger landscapes.

Institutionally these countries must create separate and specialized wildlife conservation and enforcement units. They also must support the frontline staff with equipment, infrastructure, training, incentives and insurance.

What can we do?
One of the biggest things we as individuals can do for this problem is to never support any business that exploits these animals. A huge issue for the survival of these tigers is from poaching, the illegal wildlife trade, and trafficking for their parts. Tigers have even been extirpated from areas where they had perfect habitat solely due to poaching. This industry is all driven by consumer demand. Its simple economics, in the demand goes down, so will the supply and intern less tigers will be exploited through this cruel trade. There should be a global social push for the negative attitudes surrounding tiger products. They shouldn't be a sign of wealth, they should be frowned upon. They people who purchase these products and drive the demand up for them are doing it for an image. So if socially it was frowned upon the demand would go down.

We can also support the organizations that are putting in the effort and costs into the restoration of the tiger. Many of the efforts must lie on the countries who have tiger territories, but donating to the organizations that are helping these countries would have a huge positive impact. These organizations include National Geographic, Smithsonian, Wildlife Conservation Society, the World Wildlife Foundation, Traffic, Freeland, IUCN, and Asen-Wen.

Description and Ecology 


Red pandas are slightly larger than a domestic cat weighing between 6.6 to 13.2 pounds for females and 8.2 to 13.7 pounds for males.   Red pandas are around 22 to 24.6 inches long.  They have a tail that can measure between 14.6 and 18.6 inches long which is used for balance and as a cover in the winter which some biologists believe is for warmth.   The majority of their body is a red-brown color but their belly/limbs are black and there are white markings on their head.   Primarily a herbivore, their diet mainly consists of bamboo and other low-nutrient plants; red pandas can spend up to 13 hours a day looking for bamboo.  Red pandas gain most of their nutrients from insects and other small organisms which means that in the winter red pandas lose up to 15% of their body weight when these food sources are not easily accessed.  They have a very slow metabolic rate almost as slow as sloths which can becoming even slower in colder temperatures.

Red Pandas are traditionally found in the Eastern Himalayas and other high mountains ranging from India to China.  They live in high altitude temperate forests with bamboo under stories and are very solitary creatures.   Exceptions to this are cubs who spend over a year with their mother and near the breeding season between January and March.   Breeding occurs on the ground and males in the wild are not involved in raising the cubs (usually 2 per litter).

Having a range of one square mile per female and up to two square miles for males, information is passed between red pandas through anal glands and urine.  They also have scent glands located on the bottom of red pandas’ paws to mark their territory.  Although they are also considered to be fairly silent creatures, they do make a whistling-like call to communicate occasionally.

Red pandas have no closely related living species with their nearest fossil ancestors (Parailurus) having lived three to four million years ago.   Despite their name, they have no relation to the Giant Panda; researchers believe the name was derived from the Nepali word ‘ponya’ which means bamboo or plant eating animal.   Red pandas were originally placed into the raccoon family (Procyonidae) then the bear family (Ursidae) before being placed in their own independent family (Ailuridae).

There are two subspecies of red pandas.  Ailurus fulgens fulgens is found in Nepal, northeaster India (West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachala Pradesh), Bhutan, and a part of China.  Ailurus fulgens styani is found only in China and northern Myanmar.  This subspecies is considered to have longer fur, darker coloration, and larger than the a. f. fulgens subspecies.

Geographic and Population Changes


Current projections claim that there are around 2,500 adult red pandas left in the wild, with a total of 10,000 individuals worldwide.   The total population of red pandas has decreased by around 50% over the last few decades.   The image below shows the historic range of this species from India to China.

Over the last few years, the range has severely decreased for red pandas.  In an unprecedented report conducted by Nepal in 2015, showed that there is urgent need to protect the habitat of red pandas.   The image below is from the study, which highlights habitat potential within Nepal.  The report found that only 17% of all potential habitats have a very high suitability (shown in red) for red pandas.   Only 7% of this habitat is occupied by red pandas.  It was also noted that a majority of the habitat occurs near Nepal's borders, meaning that the population will relocate outside of Nepal if current trends continue.

Listing Date and Type of Listing


Since  1994, red pandas have been posted on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list as a vulnerable species.  Since then, red pandas have gone between the vulnerable and endangered classification.   The latest assessment conducted in 2015 classified red pandas as an endangered species.   


Cause of Listing and Main Threats to its Continued Existence

The primary threats red pandas face are habitat loss and degradation, human interference ad poaching, and climate change and increasing natural disasters. Habitat loss is primarily due to the logging industry, human encroachment, and farming.   Increase of human populations throughout Asia is directly related to habitat degradation.  Increases in human populations increases the number of grazing livestock which damages the existing habitat as these animals compete with red pandas for bamboo and large portions of forests are cut down to create new grazing pastures.  This habitat fragmentation causes inbreeding populations as isolation between groups increases.  Additionally, domesticated animals such as dogs can hunt or transmit diseases to red pandas.

Poaching and the illegal pet trade of red pandas has reportedly been increasing over the last few decades, contributing to the population decline.  In the last few years, the reported number of pet red pandas in Nepal and India have greatly increased through the illegal pet trade.  Red pandas are also hunted for their unique pelt, which are then made into fur capes and hats.  It is also becoming more common for red pandas to be caught in snare traps set for other animals such as deer and wild pigs.  While governments of India, Bhutan, China, Nepal, and Myanmar legally protect this animal there is limited investment of red panda conservation by local governments. 


Climate change and increasing natural disasters also have large impacts on wild red panda populations.  As red pandas prefer to live in colder, higher altitude environments global warming is decreasing their possible habitats.  In addition, other natural disasters such as fire have become more frequent in Nepal which can prematurely kill large number of red pandas.  


Description of Recovery Plan

There currently is a Global Species Management Plan (GSMP) for red pandas in zoos worldwide.  The goals of the GSMP is to provide a demographically and genetically sustainable backup population for the wild population for protentional supplementation or reintroduction programs, raise awareness for the red panda, and provide financial, technical, scientific, and other support to the planning and implementation of red panda conservation. 
Additional conservation actions fall into four main categories:

1.      Protection against habitat loss:
This will be done through the improvement and management of red panda habitats, improving connectivity (including international borders), promoting sustainable development with minimal impact on red panda habitat, increasing the areas under protection, implementation of better Environmental Impact Assessment for all development programs, and making legal provision for the declaration of red panda community conversation areas. 
2.      Reduction of habitat degradation:
This will be achieved through the restoration of degraded habitats, replanting of bamboo, regulation of tourism by the use of entry permits, creation of restricted-access zones in core areas for red pandas during breeding season, education and promotion of community engagement on the protection of red panda habitats, providing sustainable livelihoods, using native species and agriculture systems, improved firefighting capabilities, and strengthened resource management.
3.      Reduction of red panda deaths:
This will be accomplished through the strengthening of law enforcement and improved physical protection, enhancement of trans-boundary cooperation, strengthen the connection between stakeholders, creation of reward and punishment system for the community and forest departments, establishment of anti-poaching staff, reintroduction of captive-bred individuals, formulation of dog management plan to control local dog populations, and engagement of army personnel in border bases to keep their dogs out of red panda areas.
4.      Improved awareness:

This will be managed through the design and implementation of a dedicated program using radio, pamphlets, posters, and documentary films along with securing adequate funding, improving conservation education with a focus on red pandas in schools, establishing/strengthening Green Force Club, implementing red panda research programs, identifying priority research topics, and development of a trans-national ‘Project Red Panda’

What Can You Do?

Spread Awareness of this animal!  Many researchers believe that a main reason this species is at risk is due to the lack of international awareness of the species.

The Red Panda Network is a San Francisco-based non profit who is committed to the conservation of wild red pandas through the local communities.  This is done in several ways through their website.  

     One: for as little as five dollars a month you can symbolically adopt a red panda and the money spent will be used to promote the well-being of the animal.  
     Two: you can donate money to a local family who has made it their goal to protect wild red pandas.  
     Three: you can take an ecotrip through the Red Panda Network to Nepal to see red pandas in their natural habitat; all proceeds will help fund conservation.
     Four: you can sign up for their newsletter to receive updates on red panda conservation.

Description and Ecology

Description
The California tiger salamander is 6 to 8.5 inches long.The aquatic larvae are yellowy-grey in color and have feathery external gills and an elongated dorsal-caudal fin. Terrestrial adult salamanders are lustrous black with scattered white or yellow spots on the back and sides, and have pink-tipped toes. The head is depressed with a broad rounded snout, and it has small brown protruding eyes and a large tongueAs well as its slightly longer length, the male California tiger salamander can be distinguished by a swollen cloaca.


Ecology
This species occurs in grassland or open woodland habitats, where it lives in vacant or mammal-occupied burrows, and occasionally in other underground retreats, throughout most of the year. Eggs are laid on submerged stems and leaves, usually in shallow ephemeral or semi permanent pools and ponds that fill during heavy winter rains, sometimes in permanent ponds; adults spend little time in breeding sites.

Breeding
In early winter, just after sufficient rains have fallen for the ground to be moist and for temporary pools to begin to form, these salamanders begin their nocturnal breeding migration. On rainy nights, the adults emerge from their underground burrows and roam, often more than a mile, to lay their eggs in these newly replenished vernal pools. Males typically outnumber females and often precede females to the ponds.

Geographic Changes

This species is restricted to California and does not overlap with any other species of tiger salamander. California tiger salamanders are restricted to vernal pools and seasonal ponds, including many constructed stock-ponds, in grassland and oak savanna plant communities from sea level to about 1,500 feet in central California. In the Coastal region, populations are scattered from Sonoma County in the northern San Francisco Bay Area to Santa Barbara County, and in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills from Yolo to Kern counties.

The Sonoma population appears to have been geographically isolated from the remainder of the California tiger salamander population by distance, mountains and major waterway barriers for more than 700,000 years.

Population Loss
The primary cause of the decline of California tiger salamander populations is the loss and fragmentation of habitat from human activities and the encroachment of nonnative predators. Federal, State and local laws have not prevented past and ongoing losses of habitat. All of the estimated seven genetic populations of this species have been significantly reduced because of urban and agricultural development, land conversion, and other human-caused factors.

Listing Date and Type of Listing

The State of California listed the California tiger salamander throughout its entire range (including the Central California, Santa Barbara, and Sonoma counties) as endangered on August 19, 2010 (California Fish and Game Commission 2010). The Central California tiger salamander is restricted to disjunct populations that form a ring along the foothills of the Central Valley and Inner Coast Range from San Luis Obispo, Kern, and Tulare Counties in the south, to Sacramento and Yolo Counties in the north.
Cause of Listing

As California's vernal pools, grasslands and oak woodlands disappear, the tiger salamander has fewer opportunities for regrowth in population size. The species' plight is particularly extreme in Sonoma County, where development threatens 95 percent of remaining salamander habitat, and the Santa Barbara population although it was listed as federally endangered in 2000 is still on the verge of winking out. The central California population is considered threatened, central California salamanders have been granted critical habitat, and the Sonoma population is on its way toward habitat protections.
Persisting Main Threats 
Most of the remaining range, including population strongholds in eastern Alameda and Contra Costa counties and areas south and west of Millerton Lake in Madera and Fresno counties, is imminently threatened by urban development, conversion of natural habitat to agriculture, introduction of exotic predatory animals (bullfrogs, crayfish, various fishes) that temporarily may occupy salamander breeding habitat, and/or other anthropological factors (rodent control programs, vehicle-related mortality).

2016/2017 Recovery Plan
Overview
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released a draft recovery plan for the threatened central California population of the California tiger salamander that calls for protection of 400,000 acres of breeding ponds and adjacent uplands. The recovery plan, which comes more than a decade after the amphibian received Endangered Species Act protection, is in accordance with a settlement agreement with the Center for Biological Diversity.

“Time’s running out for these rare amphibians, so we urgently need a road-map to guide the actions needed to ensure the species will survive,” said Jenny Loda, a biologist and attorney with the Center who is dedicated to protecting rare amphibians and reptiles. “Protecting the places these unique salamanders live is the only way to save them from extinction.” 

Plan's Focus
The recovery plan focuses primarily on alleviating the threat of habitat loss and fragmentation by permanently protecting breeding ponds and their adjacent uplands throughout the salamander's range, which covers 23 counties along the foothills of the Central Valley and Inner Coast Range. The plan also calls for site-specific management and monitoring plans for the protected lands to ensure continued suitability and to deal with other threats to the species, such as contaminants, non-native predators, disease and climate change. 

The strategy also ensures habitat management and monitoring and the conducting of research. Due to shifting conditions in the ecosystem, the Service anticipates the need to adapt actions that implement this strategy over time. The recovery strategy ensures that the genetic diversity of the Central California tiger salamander is preserved to allow adaptation to local environments, maintenance of evolutionary potential for adaptation to future stresses, and reduction in the potential for genetic drift and inbreeding to result in inbreeding depression.
